On April 27th, I photographed actress Joanna Kulig, star of the new movie “Elle’s”, who was in town for the gala premiere of the film at The Tribeca Film Festival.  The shoot, which is for The Untitled Magazine’s fall / winter issue, was styled by Fashion Director Jackie Astier with a modern film noir, Belle du Jour inspiration. Joanna was amazing to work with and extremely talented!  Definitely an up-and-coming star to look out for. She was very convincing in her role playing a student prostitute in the controversial new movie. Set in France, the polish actress had to learn to speak french for her role.  She play a very provocative and charming student, who moonlights from her studies by hooking with middle-aged bourgeois clients.  Stay tuned for the editorial spread, featuring the actress in looks by The Blonds, Agent Provocateur, Temperley, and Kiki de Montparnasse as well as a behind the scenes video of the shoot. On September 12, 2011, XXXX Magazine, “The Untitled Magazine” presented 19 video art productions from the magazine at the Metropolitan Museum of Art “Facets of Figuration” Benefit Art Exhibit presented by Rodman and Renshaw and curated by Gary Krimershmoys. Over 2200 guests entered the Metropolitan Museum with the XXXX Magazine videos projected simultaneously over four of the massive walls of the main exhibit hall in a looped 40 minute presentation of the 19 video art productions, while they were served champagne and canapés. “The exhibition Facets of Figuration… highlights an exciting group of artists exploring the contemporary permutations and possibilities of figurative art… From XXXX Magazine, The “Untitled” Magazine, you will see beauty, art and fashion intermingled….The featured directors that are showcased at the exhibition walk the line between art, fashion and film, embodying the new directions of the video medium. Showcased are Paul Windridge with I Turned and Walked Away, Indira Cesarine with The Spell, The Kiss and Live Art Series: 3 Videos, John Paul Zuviate with The Face, Blind Mice with Apollo and Daphne and Patrick Andersson with Fire Dancer and Daughters of Black Dahlia, among others.” Additional artists and directors in the XXXX Magazine screening at the exhibit included Iris Brosch, Zaiba Jabbar, Phantasmic TV, Bo Sul Kim, Peter Phillip Luckner and Benjamin Marlowe. Creative Director and Founder of XXXX Magazine, Indira Cesarine, worked with curator Gary Krimershmoys to select and present the screening for the exhibit and represented the magazine at the event.

Other artists featured in Facets of Figuration included Alexander Melamid, Joseph Wolf Grazi and Amir Baradaran who were featured at the XXXX Magazine Voyeur exhibit at Art Basel Miami, December, 2011, as well as Andres Serrano, Paco Cao, David Kramer, Anya Rubin, Beata Drozd, Xiaowei Chen and Aitor Lajarin.

“Even during pre-historic times, primitive cave-dwelling humans wanted, even needed, to express the world around them. From the prehistoric art of Baden-Wurttemberg in Germany, Chauvet, France and even Bradshaw art of Western Australia, humans have been depicting the people and animals around them. Fast forward thousands of years and we still find artists exploring the figure, with a range of inspirations, from Renaissance’s classical depictions to post-modern distortions using a wide range of materials and techniques.

After the advent of photography artist started questioning the need for representational drawing, as the camera would render an image more precisely. As Modernism and Post-modernism questioned the relevance of figuration, the contemporary art world reaffirmed a firm place for the inherent interest and relevance of artists’ representation of the figures around us. This exhibition shows that the figurative practices are varied, probing, visually and intellectually stimulating and a key component of artists’ dialogue in our contemporary discourse.

The artworks for this exhibition come from an eclectic range of artists, from world renowned impresarios to emerging talent, that all have a figurative resonance within their practices.”

Following the exhibit guests made their way via the grand staircase accompanied by trumpeters through the halls of the museum while admiring the priceless art on the walls of the permanent collection, to a gala dinner in each wing of the museum.

Touted as a “photographic child prodigy”, Indira Cesarine’s first solo exhibition was at the age of 16 at the Paul Mellon Arts Center. By the time she graduated high school she had exhibited 4 one-woman shows of her photographic work. While finishing a triple major in Art History, French Literature and Women’s Studies at Columbia University, she began shooting for a variety of top modeling agencies including Elite and Ford Models. Once she finished her degree, she went to London to pursue her interests in photography and journalism. She currently maintains agents in New York, London and Milan.

Her photography has been featured in countless international publications including British Vogue, GQ, Glamour, Marie Claire, Tatler, The Times, In Style and L’Officiel as well as brands such as Dior, Charles Jourdan, Kenzo and Cerruti. Aside from her work as a photographer, she has worked throughout her career as a contributing editor to various publications, including as “Fashion Editor at Large” of Lush Magazine. Her career as a director began when she with her first short film, “City of Love” being featured at Cannes Film Festival in 2007. Since then she has directed, produced and edited numerous short films while maintaining an active career as a photographer. In 2009 she launched XXXX MAGAZINE, “The Untitled Magazine”, showcasing original productions of fashion and video art films.

Recent exhibits of her work include “Facets of Figuration” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; The “Voyeur” Exhibit at Art Basel Miami, in collaboration with Miami Art Museum Contemporaries, American Friends of the Louvre and Quintessentially; “Motion Deconstructed” Exhibit with Quintessentiallly Art, New York; “Soiree Au Louvre” at the French Embassy Cultural Center; “Carte Blanche” solo show at Visionairs Gallery, Paris. Her documentary short film, “In Face of Disability” was featured at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner. Indira Cesarine and XXXX Magazine video productions can also be seen regularly on the Big Screen Plaza video billboard in Chelsea, New York.

Indira and her work have been featured internationally on TV shows such as E! TV, Fashion TV, Entertainment Tonight, Inside Edition, HBO’s Special “Ford Supermodel of the World”, MTV, ‘HIGH SOCIETY’ and “Make me a Supermodel” UK and US editions. H&M recently commissioned her to cover Spring /Summer 2012 trends for their H&M LIFE TV edition.

AMY WINEHOUSE – PHOTOGRAPHED OCTOBER 6, 2004 LONDON

I remember when I was commissioned to photograph this portrait of Amy Winehouse she was just an up and coming musician not many people had heard of yet.  She was 20 years old, and had just released her first album “Frank” to much acclaim. We met up at a dodgy hotel in London’s West End to do this shoot.  She was a few hours late, but no one really cared, as when she arrived she had so much presence. She insisted on doing her own hair and makeup which is rather unusual for a celebrity musician, but she just wanted to be herself, with her look, and her style. The shoot took about 2 hours, and she was very sweet to everyone on my team.  I think there were only 3 of use there, the stylist, myself and my assistant… it was a very intimate shoot, and she was up for trying anything. I find it sad that some of the most talented people are the most tormented.  She was an amazing artist, and I will always remember her as the lovely, happy and healthy girl I met back in 2004.

IN FACE OF DISABILITY is an inspiring documentary featuring interviews with 3 women revolving around the controversy of disability discrimination. Disability expert and TV presenter Lara Masters, disabled model Kelly Knox and UN Representative Jill Van Den Brule break their silence in regards to this controversial topic. The 25 minute documentary is directed by Indira Cesarine and edited by Emmy nominated Michael Burlingame. Produced for the Kaleidoscopic Issue of XXXX Magazine and featured at Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner 2011.

THE CRUSH (4:09)

Robert Konjic and I had worked together in London for Harrod’s several years ago, and after running into him and Julia several times out and about in London I thought they would make the perfect couple for this short.  I wanted a real couple rather than casting models for this fashion film, as the emotion is more real – and the kisses certainly are more convincing!  Julia has a brilliantly look, such incredible eyes, and Robert is a has always been one of the stronger, more timeless male models; together they make quite an iconic couple. I think they both could have an interesting future in film if that is something that interests them.  This was the first film production for both of them.

This stylist is a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll. Born in Illinois, Noah and his family quickly moved to California where his artistic roots began to flourish. He began his formal hair training during his senior year of high school and has been working in the hair industry ever since.

Elated after the success of the “Soiree au Louvre” Benefit with the American Friends of the Louvre, Christopher Pastor, director of events for AFL, and I wanted to join forces to create an exciting event for XXXX Magazine. After deliberating on various possibilities I proposed in July that we create an exhibit at Art Basel Miami showcasing the latest video productions created for the forthcoming “Voyeur” issue of XXXX Magazine.  To elaborate on the concept for the Art Basel audience, I felt it was also a great opportunity to present the works of other contemporary artists that had artwork revolving around this theme.  We decided to bring in Anne Huntington, who works in theme sales at Philipps de Pury and launched AMH Industries, to curate the contemporary artists for the exhibit. Next up was bringing in Gary Krimershmoys, my friend and founder of Quintessentially Art, who after a meeting with the 3 of us at Soho House New York, came on board as a sponsor and co-curator for the exhibit. Quintessentially was able to secure the Boulan building for the exhibit, a gorgeous new condominium building on 21st street in South Beach, and also the location for Mr. Brainwash’s exhibit at Art Basel this year. The location was secured with 1 month to go to Art Basel’s opening on December 1st, 2010, giving us a rather short window to produce an exhibit that could fill the massive 8,000 square foot space. Working up to the very last minute with my XXXX Magazine contributing artists and directors I flew down to Miami with co-curator Konstantinos Menelaou on December 1st to begin the installation of the exhibit, and see the Boulan Building for the first time. After over 16 years working as a fashion photographer I was not daunted in the least by the prospect of the production ahead of me, but to be fair once I started dealing with the South Beach program I realized that I had some serious hard work ahead! Not one to lose my temper lightly, I have to say I was tried on several occasions – first with Splashlight Miami literally tripling their quote to me the day before our opening for the background equipment. Literally minutes before the opening I finished personally putting up the backgrounds for the projections with the help of my assistant Diego Corredor and Co-Curator Konstantinos, with all the delays I encountered trying to get the required materials to the site during the madness of Art Basel Miami. I hired projection specialist Brad Baker to oversee the video projections – we had 6 in total – 2 simultaneous screenings on the ground floor of the Gallery space, 2 on the 2nd floor, 1 outside in the garden and lastly a projection onto the outside wall of the Mokai nightclub space for the after-party.  That in itself was a feat I personally have not tried before with only 2 days to install the entire ceiling mounted audio / video installation, as well as create the loops of several of the videos which needed to be customized for each projection. Not surprising, considering the Boulan would only let us install in the raw space within their working hours of 9am – 7pm, the projections were a bit delayed, with the last 2 screens being illuminated not at the 5pm opening, but by 7pm.  Despite all the hard work and insane pressure to put everything together in a very short time frame I have to say it was an amazing moment to be at the space and greet guests as they arrived.  One year after launching XXXX Magazine, I felt that my little idea had finally grown into a big one to be proud of. It was only with the support of some amazing people along the way, like Christopher Pastor from American Friends of the Louvre, that we were able to put together the “Voyeur” exhibit.

On December 3rd, 2010 XXXX Magazine presented the “Voyeur” exhibit at Art Basel Miami. Presented in collaboration with The American Friends of The Louvre, Miami Art Museum Contemporaries and Quintessentially, a group show of over 50 artists was presented to a turnout of over 1000 guests.  The latest video art films from XXXX Magazine premiered at the event in a video art installation in the two day exhibit. In celebration of the new issue, AFL and XXXX Magazine commissioned Anne Huntington, Founder of AMH Industries, to conceive of an exhibition of contemporary art around the theme of “voyeur”. Quintessentially Art’s Gary Krimershmoys, served as an curatorial advisor to the exhibition and co-curator. Video art was curated by Indira Cesarine, Creative Director of XXXX Magazine, in collaboration with film-maker/curator Konstantinos Menelaou.

The exhibition took place in the heart of South Beach at Boulan South Beach, a new luxury condominium opening in January 2011. Unik hosted the after-party at the famed Miami Beach nightclub/lounge Mokai after the opening on the 3rd. The exhibition was open to the general public on Saturday, December 4 from 2 to 9pm with a performance by artist Alexander Melamid at 6pm. A percentage of proceeds from the works of art sold will aid AFL’s efforts in supporting contemporary art at the Musée du Louvre. The American Friends of the Louvre (AFL) was founded by the Musée du Louvre in 2002 to strengthen ties between the Louvre and its American public, and to formalize the long-standing generosity of American patrons. Since 1793, the Louvre has welcomed new and emerging artists into its halls to follow in the footsteps of their great predecessors. In 2003, the Louvre initiated a new dialogue between the art of today and its permanent collection by inviting artists to present or create works inspired by the museum and its collections. This policy has established a connection and new resonance between the art of the past and contemporary creation. Recent commissions include works by Mike Kelley, Candida Höfer, Joseph Kosuth, Richard Serra, Louise Bourgeois and Willem de Kooning.

Anne Huntington is the founder of AMH Industries, LLC – a full service art advisory and curatorial company. She independently produces exhibitions including ’4 Sale’ a collaboration between Aneta Bartos, Elle Muliarchyk, Yana Toyber, and Martynka Wawrzyniak, which was featured in the November 2010 Art Issue of W Magazine; ‘An Endless Summer’, which debuted new works by the Australian artist, Anna Coroneo; ‘Pretty Young Things,’ a salon-style show of 23 emerging artists, which successfully attracted over 500 collectors, critics, curators and art lovers. MOTION DECONSTRUCTED EXHIBIT PRESENTED BY QUINTESSENTIALLY ART

I was asked by Quintessentially Art’s founder, Gary Krimershmoys, to exhibit some of my recent video art and photography in his new show, Motion Deconstructed, at New York’s Classic Car Club. The group show, which opened on June 9th, presented the works of several well known contemporary artists, including Lawrence Heller, David Kramer, Oksana Mas, John Melville, Kimberly du Ross, and Aaron Young.  The theme of the show was quite a departure from the work I am known for, as it centralized around the automobile.

As the curator Gary put it: ”Art and the automobile are two of the most luxurious, aspirational and divisive objects in humanity’s recent history. At the Motion Deconstructed show, we would like to invite you to take a contemporary look at what art can say about the automobile’s place in a modern society. Motion Deconstructed deals with the myriad of ways society fetishizes the beauty of the car, uses it as a status symbol and makes it one of the primary materialistic goals of people’s labours, but without bypassing its dark side as a clogger of streets and junkyards. Here you will not find traditional scenes in automotive art depicting race cars going around racetracks or shining as they park on a well manicured lawn. The themes of beauty and banality that are present in automobiles, juxtaposed with the auto-exotica in the Club, should make the viewer question what the connection of art and the mechanized society in motion means.”

The photographs and video I presented in the exhibit were from my recent trip to Bangkok. Video art film Bangkok High shows a blur of the modern cosmopolitan city, where movement at night envelops the viewer in a cacophony of light and fleeting images. The visuals of traffic are transformed to create an orchestra of light that become a dance of order and chaos. The video evokes a hypnotic and surreal vision created out of the ordinary hum of traffic at night.  The 2  photographs i have in the exhibit are a complete contrast to the video. They depicted vehicles that were left behind as junk to become part of the city walls. In the inner city I was struck by how the locals used these discarded vehicles to actually create walls for their work spaces and homes. Piled with debris, they are left behind to become almost living sculptures. They are on 1 hand grotesque images of the debris of our society and images of pollution created by mass consumption, and on the other hand in a strange way almost romantic in their distraught state.

I was asked by Christopher Pastor of the American Friends of the Louvre to put together a video art installation in conjunction with XXXX Magazine for the 3rd annual “Soiree au Louvre” Benefit in New York at the French Embassy Cultural Center on June 3rd.  After having only recently launched XXXX Magazine in December of 2009, I though it was a brilliant opportunity to showcase some of our films from the first issue as well as the upcoming Surreal Issue, which is coming out later this month. I put together a screening of 25 original productions produced for the issues, with a mix of contemporary art and fashion films.

XXXX is about collaborations between artists, pushing the boundaries of creative thought, multiplying ideas and concepts of sound & visuals to create multimedia productions in which motion is the key element. For the installation, as there was a DJ, so I had to present the visuals in a dynamic way in order to compensate for the lack of the accompanying sound of the films. I decided to have 2 projections playing simultaneously different movies on the 2 main walls of the ballroom. The overall effect was visually very dynamic, creating a visual universe that was on one hand very intense, yet equally beautiful.  The films that were screened included some of my video art films, as well as many of my contributors including Patrik Andersson, Phanstasmic TV, Jordan Doner, Michael Daks, Kevin Ryan, Edward Symes, Bo Sul Kim,Menelaou & Rueberg, Monika Elkev, David Bower, John Paul Zuviate, Pato Guillamon, Jesus and Sophia Deininger.

I couldn’t of asked for a more beautiful location to screen the films from XXXX Magazine. The “Soiree au Louvre” event was held at the former home of Payne and Helen Whitney. Known as one of architect Stanford White’s most imposing accomplishments, the modern-day home of the French Embassy denotes the classicism and grandeur of the Louvre in Paris. Attendees made their way into the second-floor ballroom, overlooking Central Park. This year, the YPC’s benefit will help support the American Friends of the Louvre’s $4 million fundraising campaign for the restoration of the Musée du Louvre’s 18th-century decorative arts wing, a voluminous repository for pieces donated by the likes of Salomon de Rothschild, Arconati Visconti, and Stavros Niarchos.

The American Friends of the Louvre (AFL) was founded by the Musée du Louvre in 2002 to strengthen ties between the Louvre and its American public, and to formalize the long-standing generosity of American patrons. Over one million Americans visit the Louvre each year, making it the most visited museum by Americans after the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Through special fundraising events and activities, the Young Patrons Circle (YPC) supports AFL’s mission to raise awareness for the Louvre’s collections and museum expertise and help make the Louvre’s exhibitions and permanent collections more accessible to English-speaking visitors across the globe. Committee members such as Annie Churchill Albert, Peter Davis, Poppy de Villeneuve, Kyle Hardin de Woody, Dabney Mercer, Serena Nikkhah, Maximilian Whitney, and other members of young society celebrate the world’s grandest fine art institution, the Louvre, and help to raise money for the museum restoration.
