Part of Indira Cesarine’s ongoing Pandora’s Box series, “Pandora’s Box (REBEL)” transforms the ancient Greek myth into a contemporary meditation on resistance, dissent, and political action. Within a mirrored cube, the word REBEL blazes in red neon, endlessly reflected through an infinity mirror effect that creates a hypnotic echo chamber of rebellion.
Drawing on the myth of Pandora, whose curiosity released greed, envy, pain, disease, and death into the world while leaving hope trapped inside, the work reimagines the box as a metaphor for the consequences of political action—and inaction. Created in response to escalating threats to human rights, including attacks on reproductive freedom, immigrant rights, and democratic institutions, the sculpture serves as both warning and call to action.
The infinite repetition of the word “REBEL” functions as a rallying cry, urging viewers to reject complacency in the face of injustice. At the same time, it acknowledges the paradox of resistance: how protest can become trapped within cycles of outrage, spectacle, and repetition. Suspended between urgency and uncertainty, the work asks what meaningful rebellion looks like today and whether true change requires moving beyond symbolic resistance toward collective action. Ultimately, the work insists that hope is not passive—it is something that must be defended.
“Pandora’s Box (REBEL)” premiered at the Every Woman Biennial 2026 exhibition SPECTALiA at Pen + Brush, New York. The work was also featured in an exclusive interview with the artist published by Artnet News, highlighting Cesarine’s ongoing exploration of feminist resistance, political activism, and the role of art as a catalyst for social change.
