“Metamorphosis (Bloom Within)” (2026) is a series of oil on canvas paintings by Indira Cesarine, presenting both a visual and personal exploration of transformation—a surreal awakening through paint, light, and emotion. The imagery speaks to cycles of loss and renewal, fragility and strength, reflecting universal themes of feminine identity alongside the artist’s own journey of self-rediscovery.
The series emerged after a period of distance from painting, when returning to the canvas required a renewed sense of intention. It began with the layering of portraiture and blooming florals—an intuitive gesture that sparked a shift in Cesarine’s practice. Something about the union between the human and the botanical felt transformative, as if the image itself was in a state of becoming. Cesarine developed a series of oil painting studies, each exploring variations in color, tone, and emotion. Through this process, each canvas became a mirror—each layer of paint a step toward reconnecting with a more instinctive, expressive form of making.
The motif of the flower has long been central to Cesarine’s work, appearing in series such as “LABYRINTH” and “Lumière,” as well as in her body-painting and sculptural practices. Drawn to the symbolic language of flowers and their ability to convey beauty, desire, vulnerability, and transformation, Cesarine reimagines the floral motif through a surrealist lens. In “Metamorphosis (Bloom Within),” the flower is not ornamental but integral, merging with the figure to suggest a state of continuous evolution.
The woman’s face becomes both landscape and language—a terrain where identity, memory, and desire converge. Petals and flesh intertwine, dissolving boundaries between body and world, self and other, nature and artifice. This visual language draws from surrealist traditions while asserting a feminist perspective: one that presents womanhood not as a fixed image, but as a dynamic, evolving force.
“Metamorphosis (Bloom Within)” is ultimately a meditation on renewal. It reflects the act of returning—to painting, to presence, and to the transformative potential of creation. Through these works, metamorphosis is not a singular event, but an ongoing process of becoming.
The final large-scale painting from the series premiered in the “IN FULL BLOOM” exhibition at The Untitled Space in May 2026, alongside several of the preparatory oil painting studies.
