“IN THE GARDEN” Photogravure series by artist Indira Cesarine, 2023. Printed on cotton paper in three different ink variations. All artworks including the original etched metal plates (used as the negative) were created and printed by hand by the artist.
Photogravure is a printmaking process that uses a photographic image to create an etched metal plate, typically copper, for printing. It’s an intaglio method, meaning the image is photo transferred and etched with acid into the metal plate, and ink is then hand-transferred from the plate onto paper using a printing press. This results in prints with rich tonal gradations, soft blacks, and a characteristic velvety texture. The process was important in 19th-century photography, but by the 20th century was only used by some fine art photographers. By the mid-century it was almost extinct.
