She is a founding member of the group Pussy Riot, a Russian feminist protest and performance art group based in Moscow. On August 17, 2012, she was arrested after a performance at the Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. However, she was released early on December 23, 2013, under a newly passed amnesty bill dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Russian constitution. In 2022, Tolokonnikova was given the Outstanding Award by OutRight Action International for her effort in raising $7M in donations for Ukraine with the NFT Project Ukraine DAO.
