A series of India Ink on paper paintings by Indira Cesarine inspired by the suffragists who paved the way for the 19th Amendment to be ratified including Susan B Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, Matilda Joslyn Gage, Carrie Lane Chapman Catt, Frances E Willard, Mary Talbert, and Amelia Bloomer. The paintings are featured on HERFLAG, a nationwide initiative and large-scale flag that commemorates 100 years of Women’s Suffrage, with one female artist representing each of the 36 states that ratified the 19th Amendment. Cesarine was selected to represent NY State, and created a stripe featuring 8 of her suffragist portraits, which was celebrated with a ceremonial event at the Albany Institute of History & Art Museum – the event included a speech by the Mayor of Albany Kathy Sheehan as well as NY State Assembly Representative Patricia Fahy and an incredible performance by dancer Katherine Crockett. The flag premiered at the Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock, Arkansas, on Women’s Equality Day 2020, also the centennial anniversary of the day the 19th Amendment was officially enrolled into the United States Constitution. Several of the Suffragist series paintings were also exhibited at Smack Mellon in Brooklyn, NY for the 2020 exhibition “Bound Up Together: On The 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment”.
